For example: Raspberry Pi can set up as a Gateway, which receives sensor data from various remote nodes using LoRa (WAN). The nodes could be any device from a raspberry pi to an Arduino depending on the requirement (battery life/processing power). These data can be stored, viewed and analyzed simultaneously over the cloud.
Raspberry Pi is a small and affordable computer that plugs into any computer monitor or TV, and uses a standard keyboard and mouse inputs. It is capable of doing everything a desktop computer can do. Because of its small size, Raspberry Pi can be used as IoT Gateway in remote sites, along with Arduino, beacons and various sensors to store and process sensor data in real-time.
LoRaWAN is a MAC protocol for a high capacity long range and Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN). It is built using Semtech’s LoRa modulation scheme. Lore is a modulation technology, based on spread-spectrum techniques and variety of Chirp Spread Spectrum (CSS) which provides a significantly longer range than similar technologies. LoRaWAN provide basic needs of IoT such as secure bidirectional communication, mobility and localization services.
Beacons are small wireless devices that continuously transmit radio signal containing small amount of data. The signal can be captured by nearby mobile devices using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology. Beacons can be used as IoT device to trigger specific actions through a beacon compatible application. Main uses of beacons in IoT are indoor navigation, tracking of objects, and triggering requests for things like payment, lock/unlock.
DecaWave is optimized for Indoor Precision Location, data communications for RTLS and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). It allows the location of objects in RTLS for a range of 10cm indoors, high data rate communications is up to 6.8 Mbps and has excellent communication range up to 300m. Today, DecaWave has a wide range of applications for both real time location systems (RTLS) and Ultra Low-Power Wireless Transceivers in areas as diverse as Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, Security, Transport, Warehousing, Logistics, Inventory, Manufacturing, Healthcare & Supply Chain Management.
NodeMCU is an open source IoT platform that helps to prototype application development within a few Lua script lines. It is cheaper in price which requires simple setup with good instructions and support. The firmware uses the Lua scripting language that is based on the eLua project, and built on the Espressif Non-OS SDK for ESP8266.
Arduino is an open source platform that is based on easy to use hardware and software. It is popular in the fields of electronics as it can easily interact with buttons, LEDs, speakers, motors, camera, GPS unit, smart phone and TVs. Its board design uses a wide variety of controllers and microprocessors. Arduino’s hardware is cheaper and software is completely free so, one can take maximum benefits of developing electronics projects. Nowadays, it is used for making robots, 3D printer, Laser Harp, LED Cubes and many more innovations.
